Sam moved to the United States in 2014 to launch the New York City campus of one of the original coding bootcamps, Dev Bootcamp.
After teaching adults to code for three years, he joined the venture-backed coliving company, Common, as their Head of Digital Product and Engineering. Sam led the software efforts of Common from a USD $16m Series B through a $40m Series C raise.
In 2019, Sam cofounded Nuvocargo, a digital freight forwarder unlocking the potential of people and businesses across the Americas by simplifying trade. Nuvocargo builds software to make it easier for companies to move commercial cargo between Mexico, the US and Canada. Nuvocargo raised a USD $5.3m seed round in April 2020 led by NFX and ALLVP with participants including Y Combinator, One Way Ventures, Maya Capital and Magma Partners.
Sam and his wife also own and run Isolation Proof, a craft distillery in upstate New York that produces gin and other distilled spirits.
Sam was born and raised in Rotorua. He attended Rotorua Boys’ High School, then the University of Auckland, first for a degree in logic and computation and then, later, a law degree.
