LETS GET DOWN TO BUSINESS.

Question :
Hello Manaaki experts! My name is Lilah and I am a 10 year old schoolgirl.  I have been on a mission since 2019 to get more drinking fountains installed in our parks around the country (Auckland (for example) only has fountains in 5% of its parks) when I started The Public Water Project.  I decided to campaign for more fountains as I am passionate about preventing single use plastic entering our oceans and landfill. Drinking fountains also encourage healthy habits amongst children.  Initially, I was talking to companies about sponsoring fountains but last year made this more difficult so I also decided to launch a social enterprise to generate income that I can then use to buy fountains. My business is called Water Us and I am selling eco-friendly toilet paper (in gorgeous paper packaging designed by well known NZ artist, Reuben Paterson), with 50% of the profits going to buy drinking fountains for our parks and playgrounds.  I have launched a crowd-funding campaign on Pledge Me to pre-sell products which you can see here.  I want to raise $30,000 to fund the first bulk production run.  Once I have some stock, I will launch an online shop that will sell direct to my customers and I also want to offer a subscription service.  I would like some advice please on how to create good online marketing campaigns for facebook and instagram which will help me build my subscription business.  My mum has built a basic site for me on Shopify which you can see here as a temporary site until after my Pledge Me campaign finishes when we can then build an actual shop.    Thank you for your time.

    Hi Lilah!

Firstly wow, what your doing is amazing and to only be 10 years old, is an awesome achievement! My name is Annabelle and I am 21yrs old! I specialise in social media and marketing campaigns to drive sales for businesses. It’s great that you also have the Shopify site as this definitely is the best platform to be using. I work with Shopify as well

My recommendations for Facebook and Instagram would be:

Run some advertising explaining your story. People will be able to resonate and might feel more inclined if they know the story behind what you are doing. I would recommend using images of maybe yourself or of areas you want to place water fountains perhaps?

I would also look at maybe doing a video campaign talking about the damage that plastic does to the ocean hence the importance of having more water fountains. You could have some of your friends perhaps speak in a video about the importance of this!

I think what you are doing is an amazing project and if you ever want more help or someone to assist you with the social media marketing campaign side of things, I would love to be able to help you. I am passionate about young entrepreneurs and helping the community so feel free to reach out to me at annabellelindberg30@gmail.com

Don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any further questions!

Kia Ora Lilah – love this because you are taking action to fulfil on a purpose that ultimately will I hope make the world a better place. Go you. Now I am no FB or Insta specialist, but I do read a lot and pick up links to some awesome articles that can help the reader pick up some tips on this subject, so sharing these with you. Good luck.

I should finish with – a key to any purpose driven business or cause is always reminding and connecting your activities back to the cause. Social is so good for this – videos, photo’s of installed fountains, events and use of different platforms that engage with your target – e.g. FB, Instagram, TikTok and more.

    Wishing you the best, Andy

Sometimes coincidences happen that work. This one may not work – that’s why I’m being a bit coy about revealing details.

I know a water company… I’ve written to them asking if they might like to meet you and talk about your plans.

    No promises, understand?

They might say flat no. But if they don’t, I’ll introduce you straight away and ask @AndyHamilton to support you at that meeting.

    Best Rebecca

    Dear Ms Caroe
Thank you for your help! I have spoken to the sustainability manager at Watercare and the CEO of Just Water already if either of those are the ones that you mean. If not, I can’t wait to hear back from you!

    Hi Lilah,

This is absolutely amazing to hear about the work that you are doing. In fact it would be amazing for an adult to do, but for a ten-year-old you are phenomenal! Keep it up.

There is lots of great advice above. I will no doubt have advice too but would love to see the links you mentioned first… I do not see them included, could you please share the links to your shopify site and pledgeme campaign?

I own two digital marketing agencies (Likeable Lab and LeadSocial) specialising in social media and would be very happy to support you with some extra guidance and advice at no cost whatsoever. If you would like to take me up on this, please email me nick@likeablelab.com and I will be happy to guide you as best I can.

    Keep up the phenomenal work!

    Nick

    Dear Mr McDonald
Thank you for your advice. The team at Manaaki have put my links at the bottom of my question. Sorry that I did not include them properly! My mum says to tell you the shopify site is very basic and needs work so any advice you can give us would be very helpful, thank you. I would also like to meet and talk further about your offer, I will email you tomorrow.
Thank you again for your time.

    Evening Lilah 🙂

I absolutely love the initiative you have started, the passion and desire to have a healthy country can be felt in your words.

I had the opportunity to watch your live tonight with the wonderful Rachel Adams (GM of Manaaki) and was very inspired (I was also the girl who was asking all those questions on the question stickers).

The other experts that have posted in this thread have made excellent points and also offered up some wonderful opportunities, what an awesome start to get your mind around the social platform and execution opportunities.

Going off my questions asked tonight from your live – Have you thought about setting up a Chooice Store ( http://www.chooice.co.nz ) and offering pre-sales of product via the Facebook group ( https://www.facebook.com/groups/Chooice ).

Chooice has created an phenomenal platform with an incredible reach to active shoppers. Posting on the group page comes at no cost as well so it is the perfect opportunity to test the market with some simple advertising.

I think creating a post similar to what Annabelle Lindberg said around a video campaign would be very well received in the Group Page.

The positive to posting in the Chooice Group (I would recommend posting as a personal profile and also as your business profile) is the opportunity to reach a great platform that currently has a following of 546.6k shoppers, majority based here in NZ and ready/wanting to support local business. There are also no limitations to how often you post as long as you follow the Chooice guidelines.

One other option that could be quite positive from posting on the group is the potential reach to Airbnb owners around NZ who could sign up to your subscription package. Nothing says live, love local like an awesome kiwiana bathroom.

I have spoken to Soleil (pronounced So-Lay) who is Director CX of the Chooice website and she has said that she is happy for you to contact her on support@chooice.co.nz to talk about possibilities on the platform and she is happy to help you to set up your store.

Hopefully this is able to help Lilah, can’t wait to see your growth and always happy to help you in the social sector.

    Jazzy.

    Dear Jazzy
Thank you so much for watching last night and for your questions! Also for your suggestion to join Chooice. I didn’t know about Chooice but Mum has shown me this morning. You have so many stores on there! Over 2000! Mum and I will get in touch with Soleil but I am not sure we can do anything until after the Pledge Me campaign is over, because if I sell on another website I may not reach my goal on Pledge Me, which means I don’t get anything. Also I don’t know how my business would be seen amongst 2000 other stores. Do people search for every day products like toilet paper on Chooice or just for things like gifts?
    Thank you for your time,
    From Lilah
