LETS GET DOWN TO BUSINESS.

Question :
Hey, thanks for providing this platform! I run a small business (mobile coffee cart) that is essentially a social enterprise (in short, it exists to empower young women to enter the workforce) and was wondering whether you could recommend any good mentoring avenues in this specific space? Thanks :)

  • Hi Anita

Are you looking for mentoring for the young women entering the workforce, or for yourself specifically?
I do know that Mana in Mahi (a branch of Ministry of Social Development) are very proactive in supporting businesses who are helping developing people into full time workers, and there is financial support in that process also. I’m working with them on a couple of projects and find then to be super helpful and enthusiastic about this particular field.
I also recently spoke with Rochelle Stewart-Allen, who is the GM Hui Ē! Aotearoa, and they exist to support community groups and charities, with specific skills in grant application writing. If this is something that’d be of interest I’d be happy to connect you. We’re getting her on board as an expert so I can refer her to this query if you like also.

    All the best.

    Hi Anita
I am happy to talk with you about this, given the work we do in the women’s prison through RAW
http://www.raw.org.nz there may be some nice fits. Also happy to assist you with the business model and mentor advice

Hi Jada, thanks for your reply. The mentoring would be for me with running the business (for example at the moment I’m operating as a sole trader but not sure if this is the best model for what I want to do, so conversations and guidance around that type of thing). My background is in social work with children & young people, so am fairly comfortable with that side. I will look into those two organisations, thank you for that and if you could link Rochelle that would be awesome.
    Thanks again,
    Anita

    Hi Annah,

Thank you for your reply, it would be really great to connect. Project RAW looks awesome and I’m sure there is a lot I could learn from your work in that area!
    Thanks, Anita

Sounds like you have a great idea going. I suggest you start with Small Business Mentoring – https://www.businessmentors.org.nz/small-business-mentoring. Great news is that it’s currently free as NZTE and MBIE are covering the registration fees at the moment. You’ll get a pop-up to use the payment code COVID to bypass the payment system.
