LETS GET DOWN TO BUSINESS.

Question :
HI there – a question about the wage subsidy – we are a winter seasonal business, ramping up with staff around this time of year – we usually also have around 14 school kids on our books (Yr8-Yr13) as we have set up a pathway over the last few years to get kids into the winter industry, with on the job training & qualifications. These kids work usually bewteen 6-8 hrs/week over 3 months.  Can we apply for the wage subsidy for these kids?  I was thinking perhaps about one wage subsidy for every 4 kids?  Weird question I know but it’s either getting a subsidy or not having any kids on the books at all for us this season as our business has been decimated – however if we got the subsidy we could keep the trianng program going. Thanks

  • Hi,

Whether you can apply for the wage subsidy would be determined by whether your business and fact scenario qualifies.

Are the kids employed at the time you apply for the subsidy, do they qualify as part time workers, and has your business suffered a drop in income of 30% or more.

Please refer to the link to review the criteria of the scheme and determine whether your business qualified: https://www.workandincome.govt.nz/covid-19/wage-subsidy/who-can-get-it.html#null

If it doesn’t , I would explore whether there are other training subsidies etc available for your business.

    cheers

Morena Jedimaster – this is a very good question. I have hunted around the MSD site and cannot find any criteria that says children are not eligible. What it says is a bunch of criteria you need to meethttps://www.workandincome.govt.nz/covid-19/wage-subsidy/index.html and it also says if your employees work more than 20 hours, then you apply for the full-time rate and if they have worked less than 20 hours, then you can apply for the part-time rate, however just note what you will need to do is ‘average out’ each persons hours and then apply a portion for each person and not the full part-time rate of $350 per week – so you have to do a micro-tote up to work out that – and then pay them accordingly – – https://www.workandincome.govt.nz/covid-19/wage-subsidy/payments-and-processing-times.html#null

My one proviso here is I have this feeling about an age limit for people to be eligible for the wage subsidy – but I cannot find anything about this anywhere.

Here is a helpline which is not Government, but says they provide initial and free advice – https://employerline.co.nz/wage-subsidy/?gclid=CjwKCAjw5Ij2BRBdEiwA0Frc9XWf8fiAmErffnCyn_gNbPUZIhJehbT2oMhiB2e9v6rDKypIS_EdExoC3j8QAvD_BwE
