Question :
Hi there,Need some advice on the possibility of growing a tropical root vegetable here in nz, more sustainable and cost effective ways to be able to do that during our winters or is it possible to make a new variety of this vegetable that can handle the colder climates?Hope to hear from you soon

  • Hi,

The best place to start here would be a call to Plant and Food Research https://www.plantandfood.co.nz/ – they would be where I would start. Doing this kind of things for growers is what they do both “fully” commercially (where a single grower pays for the research and owns the results) or “shared” commercially (where a group of growers pays and they all own the results), or they work with growers on longer term more risky projects using govt grants and growers pay royalties on sales from plant variety rights if the project is successful.

I hope this helps, good luck.

In addition to Will’s response there are companies that sell greenhouses, one which comes to mind is a NZ manufacturer which has been around a long time in fact I used to work for them when I was a student 20 years ago! https://harfords.com/ This will give you an idea of the capital costs both for the greenhouse and the equipment involved.
