Question :
Kia Ora, I have a small business idea and was wondering if I was able to apply for startup grants for equipment etc Would appreciate any additional advice on getting started. I consider myself an ideas person and have finally found the kaha to start with just one in the hopes of growing. Nga Mihi, Dominique

  • Kia Ora Dominique – good on you! Ka Pai. Ok, so on the grants piece – if your idea is heavy r&d based, there might be some getting started R&D grants (to like engage an IP lawyer) available on a matching basis e.g. the government fund part of the costs – if you are on something like a job seeker programme with WINZ or MSD – there is this grant which can include equipment if they sign off on your business plan – https://www.workandincome.govt.nz/products/a-z-benefits/self-employment-start-up-payment.html – otherwise, you might qualify for the regional partner programme, which gives subsidised support on coaching – but not for equipment.

Short answer – there is probably not funding to buy equipment.

Guidance on where to go, how to start, check out this article which I think is quite helpful – https://www.ycombinator.com/library/61-order-of-operations-for-starting-a-startup

Have a read and let me know what you think. Andy
