    A social enterprise is a business which also has a social purpose which becomes a big part of your marketing strategy. How you start a social enterprise is the same decision process as a business – https://www.business.govt.nz/starting-a-business/

    The only other consideration is whether your business would also:

    Benefit from becoming a charity, and
    Qualify to become charity

    A social enterprise can have profit objectives, provide you with an income and still deliver social outcomes.

    A charity that is a social enterprise can have profit objectives, deliver social outcomes (your charitable purpose), and provide you with a market value salary but all additional profits return to your charitable purpose. The biggest benefit of charitable status is exemption from income tax. On windup of the business, all surpluses would also go to your charitable purpose. There are additional ongoing compliance costs of setting up as a charity including setting up an independent governance board, the obligation to file an Annual Return including financial statements and depending on your turnover having an annual review or audit.

    While becoming a charity has its attractions, when in start-up you may want to consider starting as a business, working out how to make your social enterprise model work, and if it’s sustainable at a later date restructuring and applying for charitable status.

    Great to see that you have had success outside of a medical journey
    with a natural product, it is very much the way of the world at the moment.
    Key to your success will be a good social strategy to get your story out there and have others that are in a
    frustrated medical space perhaps look to your balm as an alternative. You will need to review your
    product labelling and create a simple E commerce website so people
    have a point of contact and ability to buy off you.
    The website needs to talk to your story (a great story is a strong sales tool)
    Reach out to those businesses that you see as being a possible distributor
    for your product and go and talk to them, get a feel for the market your are in, do you know who your your
    competitors are?
    Is there a possibility to produce your recipe for another brand (white labelling)
    The best place to start is with those that you would like to collaborate with.
    Talk to tertiary providers in the area as they will have interns
    that are studying and looking for placement(can be done remotely) that may be able to design a website as
    part of their required hours (no cost to you) and put together small social strategy for you to get you
    started.

    I am not sure what capability we have in the swimwear space in NZ,
    but it would be easy enough to find out.
    We stil produce elastic in NZ so worth calling Habipax,Trent, to talk to them about the manufacturing base
    that exists, we also have a few fabric wholesales left they would be worth talking to, as they will have
    industry contacts, Frost Textiles, Brendon and Wall Fabrics, Richard .
    Stirling cutters in Papakura, Ian would be worth a call, as he does a large amount of Industry cutting
    so more about doing the leg work through a few phone calls to see who and what is still operating in NZ

    Morning .. This is not as easy journey, it can be a lot better to work with trusted suppliers on the ground in China (this is about time, trust and connection.) Alibaba have high freight costs and long delays to get stock NZ, these can negate the cost of doing the the business on this site. Finding someone on the ground in China that can liase with the suppliers on the AB site, accept the delivery locally, check quality and then send to you ( NZ POST ) makes for a more cost effective and timely option.

    Good morning,
    Driving your digital presence is the way of the world moving foreward so a strong digital strategy is key,there are lots of courses that you can do on line in ADwords and facebook advertising and SEO for your website. Alternatively look to engage a social media strategist to help you construct your social strategy.
    a platform like Unicorn may be a good place to start. It may also be timely to look to employ someone in a marketing and social media role to manage this for you, even if just a few days a week, there are a lot of great people (with these skills) in the market at the moment looking for roles in the marketing space .

    Physical retail isn’t the easiest space to be in at the moment, it will depend on what you are selling
    It may simply be a strong social strategy that you need to grow your product on line, as this is where a lot
    of the growth is. Aligning with a retailer that may struggle to pay you in this environment will not be
