If lockdown is only 4 weeks, what happens to the 12-week wage subsidy?

      Question submitted 11/04/20 @ 02:50pm

We received "12 weeks' worth" of wage subsidy and are paying those out every pay cycle (fortnight for us) - are there official info on what happens if the lockdown is lifted after 4 weeks? E.g. returning the balance to the government.

I have my own consulting business which I have been full time with for 5 months offering services in design, project management, research and innovation. Things have been going well until COVID-19.As work has tried up, I am now looking to pivot a bit and get some business ideas I have off the ground. I need help with networking, finding any funding and grants as well as mentoring.

      Question submitted 09/04/20 @ 01:07pm

I am confused about how the Wage Subsidy applies to temps. If we had a Temp on a 12 week assignment and we applied for the Wage Subsidy, but then they were subsequently stood down after six weeks, do we have to keep subsidising them to 80% of their salary for the full 12 weeks?

      Question submitted 09/04/20 @ 01:06pm

A business owner has given me this question – I work in retail and I applied for and received the Wage Subsidy. I have topped up my staff’s salaries to 80% for the first two weeks, but I have no revenue and I can’t afford to top them up anymore. My accountant has advised me that I can only pay my staff the subsidy from here on in. I have emailed all of my staff and explained our situation and given them notice of this change in pay. I have suggested they could use some of their leave at this point if they wish. Everyone has been receptive and understanding, but I have one staff member who is demanding I pay them the full 80%. I am unsure what I should do. I simply don’t have any revenue.

I have been taking all of the advice around getting lean with my costs, communicating with my team, and staying positive – one area that I have not looked at it are my insurances – the costs and also the coverage – what insights or guidance can you give me and other businesses about what to do with my insurance premiums right now? Thank you.

Hi Team  – couple of questions. I’m the Exec Director of the Council for International Development – Umbrella organisation for NZ’s aid charities. 1. Can our members access Manaaki? 2. Are you interested in talking about a kind of Icehouse model for NFPs? Some of our members won’t make it through COVID-19 – they can fundraise. For some its a acceleration of the inevitable. But not for all. Thanks – look forward to hearing from you –

      Question submitted 05/04/20 @ 08:51am

On 27 March we applied for the wage subsidy for us four employees.  On 29 march we received an email saying that $4,686.40 has been deposited into our account.   If we divide $4,686.40 by $585.80 we get two weeks pay for four people.    The shutdown is for four weeks.  Shouldn’t we have received $9,372.80?   Or is it that because my wife and I take draws, not wages, that we have received four weeks pay for two employees and nothing for ourselves? We are totally shut down with no income and expect to take a bath over April and probably beyond since our customers are also shut down.   I hear that some companies are receiving 12 weeks pay per employees.   I’m totally confused.  Please help me understand what we may be entitled to and how to obtain same.  We are trying to keep our employees (and ourselves) from redundancy.

I assist NZ’ers with access to the 63 District courts in NZ to apply for Limited Licences when their demerit points exceed 100. 9 months existing and 80 licences succeeded through the courts.Looking for any ways to extend my service into other areas within the Law sector that allows me to further disrupt the legal sector and allow access for NZ’ers to self represent in any court in NZ.

      Question submitted 03/04/20 @ 04:45pm

Hi Travel & Business Experts!I have a boutique travel agency in Australia and expanded into New Zealand about 8 months ago – I am based in New Zealand. Due to the nature of COVID-19, I have lost all business (income) until at least December 2020. I still have a few inquiries coming through for next year, but certainly not at capacity of what I am used to.. My people (Clients) are uncertain about future travel at this time because of the issues that have come up with cancellation terms and conditions through airlines/suppliers, time-due of refunds, which for most of my AU database, is upwards of 9 months, and with these changing every day, and insurance not covering, they are not confident in placing funds down.. What I am thinking of doing, is posting some ‘pre-registration’ options for some holidays for 2021. I am thinking of basing these packages on the usual travel spots, inc; Bali, Fiji, New Zealand. I am then thinking of contacting Intrepid / Scenic / Royal, to start working on some deals for next year. I was just wondering if anyone can please advise me on the best way to do this and if I even should do it? How should I notify my people of these awesome 2021 programs I can create? How much do I charge for a ‘pre-reg’ deposit – to ensure a financial commitment? What should my rules around this be?Any assistance here would be greatly appreciated. I am trying my best to stay positive, but with all income down the drain, I am just as nervous as my clients are around where the industry is heading.. Thanks in advance, Soleil

      Question submitted 03/04/20 @ 04:10pm

As a sole trader, my lump sum wage subsidy is treated as “other income” in a tax return rather than as wages/PAYE. I have just been advised by IRD in writing that because I received it in March it must be declared as income in the 2019/20 tax year. As background I applied for this based on a projected significant downturn in business from April onwards. I applied on 24 March and it was paid to me on 27 March. This treatment seems very onerous on sole traders. If I had known I would have waited until April to apply as this extra tax would have been far easier to deal with if it was apportioned over the 12 weeks it represents or from 1 April 2020. I wonder whether this income tax timing issue which seems to be an ‘unintended consequence’ for sole traders in particular can be challenged or whether anyone has advice on this?

As an employer can I reduce staff hours to 80%, which still allows me to meet one of the requirements for the government subsidy? We are fielding a lot of similar type questions – especially regarding subsidies and hours – and there are lots of comments in the media on this so having sought legal opinion re my wording I have dropped in an immediate response to this question, which builds on one of the initial threads. I am sure others may also have thoughts.
