HiI’m looking for a virtual CTO.I’m about to launch an online auction site where the proceeds of the sales go to charities. The development is nearly complete, and I’ll need to arrange hosting (I’ll be given the code). So essentially, I’d like support in getting the hosting set up, as well as highlighting any other areas from a technology perspective that I need to be aware of, and address appropriately.I hope this is enough information to start a conversation and get the correct person on board.Regards

Hi, if I have loaded a lot of information into an application but feel it is not the right programme for me moving forward, is it possible to ask them to provide our data in a useable format, such as a CSV or excel file, rather than having to redo everything.  Thanks

      Question submitted 24/09/20 @ 11:00pm

I am planning to launch an education services business in the new year. The business plan is fairly well advanced and I am happy with the progress made so far. My question is regarding the website that I am having built. A friend is doing it for “mates rates” and it looks pretty good but I am now thinking that I want to get some comparisons in terms of quality control and pricing. I know how to find a builder or painter but how do I find a website developer? Also, the current website design has all the standard features – home page, faqs, contact etc. However, it was suggested to me that it should also have a facility for customers to pay via the website. This will be an added expense but would it be advisable to get this added before going live? ie. would it be good value for money? It is worth noting that my original plan was more of a “side-hustle” with minimal financial outlay required. I am now of the opinion that it is worth thinking a bit bigger and that getting a more complex website will add value even though the upfront cost would be bigger. Finally, what about an app for phones that connect to the website. That was also suggested. Do you think that is something that could wait until the business is showing signs of success (to minimise my initial financial outlay).

Hey Experts – I just opened new retail business selling homewares in Auckland – I have some unique lines that are pretty cool, and I would love some advice around the options for establishing an online platform for selling to people who don’t want to come into my Store – I am doing the Facebook and Insta pages and photos – but I am think with some of our unique lines – should I Shopify or Swiftly or Facebook Shops or Instagram Shops – my focus is the retail footprint, but this covid-19 thing has made me realise I need to be way more digital and online as well. I would love some guidance. In my shop I have all of the digital fruit like Vend etc. Thank you!

      Question submitted 18/07/20 @ 07:00am

We had such great help with a question earlier that I thought I might try my luck again. This time with pricing. We have developed software and hoped to charge subscription fees rather than high sales commissions. Our goal was to make our services and product affordable for all, but seems others believe our prices could be too low, stabbing ourselves in the foot. We have completely funded ourselves through freelance and other means but do in future need to make a profit to expand our team and increase business reach. Any advice on how we can calculate fair costings?

Hi, I am starting a new online business (was in the pipeline pre Covid) I am wanting to set up a Shopify store, was hoping to do it myself but think it outside my current skill set, I was wondering if any one knew of a web designer that would be willing to work along side me, pay them to do the initial set up but also teach me how to make changes so going forward I would be able to add/change the website where needed myself. I am wanting something great but also price conscience. Many thanks

      Question submitted 01/07/20 @ 01:18pm

Shopify or WordPress/WooCommerce for e-commerce. We purchased the development of a new website and online shop on WordPress/WooCommerce, launched end March 2020 (previously on Wix). We weren’t advised to use Shopify at the time. We are ratcheting up our e-commerce – refining our web design and email marketing etc etc. It has been suggested to us that a really smart e-commerce system is easier done with Shopify (designed for e-commerce and easier to use) rather thanWordPress/WooCommerce (great if you want special design but not easy to use). Further, that we should change now before we undertake the refinement of our e-commerce. If we were starting with no website, it is probably a no-brainer – go with Shopify. But we have our website in place, and we’ve been working with it for nearly 3months. I understand that we must look forward for what ‘s best, and not focus on sunk costs – but what is best? The question for us is: Is Shopify better than WordPress/WooCommerce for us and if so why? Should we change now before refinement despite what it will cost to change ($3k or so) and the disruption to do this. Especially when we are in a critical point of recovery from C-19 impacts. Or is this something that could be actioned at another point? The context for the decision is: None of us are experts in any of these apps/platforms, but we’ve been learning. The labour pool that we draw from doesn’t have these skills either so we use self-learning and training to make do in this area. The developer who set up our WordPress/WooCommerce site/shop advises when required at a cost, but is not ‘on-tap’ support. We only have a small range of products we produce in our online shop but want to expand our offering in a range of ways – so we have much more of a store worth visiting!! Turnover is only about $5k currently.

We are a small Events Hire service business, we hire bean bags, bouncy castles and marquee, we’ve suffered a loss this year due to Covid 19, we’ve had to be crafty and add a completely new Furniture moving service to the business. I would like to know if there is a app service that our small business can tap into? We have an awesome app concept for our Furniture moving service yet we’ve been quoted between 20k-50k for a basic designed app, is there anything out there that can help us out in this space that is not going to cost us a fortune please?

      Question submitted 12/05/20 @ 10:37am

I have a few questions on contact tracing applications please – who can recommend options for a business to use – I have three examples. (1) Retail / Restaurant (2) Office Space (3) Construction Site – in each use case I am interested in the best applications for ‘simple entry/exit’ and also for ‘complex drop-ins/drop-outs’ when you have lots of people. Interested in those that are contactless such as QR codes or Text based. Finally, how these applications deal with a ‘positive test’ – actually how that will work in practice. I am asking these questions because we are getting quite a few questions off platform around the options and would love to get some guidance on the choices in front of our small business owners.
